Living Dangerously

March 2, 2016

WHOI geologist Jeff Donnelly (left) of the Coastal Systems Group and actor Ian Somerhalder hold a sediment core during recent filming for an episode of the documentary TV series “Years of Living Dangerously,” which focuses on climate research and the people and places being affected by climate change. Layers in sediment cores reveal long-term records of past hurricanes and storms. Understanding the conditions that led to more frequent and/or severe hurricanes and storms in the past will help aid in forecasting the hurricane activity to prepare for in the future. The show featuring Donnelly’s research will air later this year on the National Geographic Channel. (Photo by Tom Kleindinst, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
