Adventures in Science

“Science is an adventure, not a career,” WHOI microbiologist Holger Jannasch (1927-1998) once said. Equally at home in the lab or at sea, Jannasch is remembered for making seminal discoveries in microbial ecology and launching the new field of deep-sea microbiology. He is shown here in 1966 working with a chemostat, a device that allowed Jannasch and his colleagues to provide a continuous flow of nutrients to the marine microorganisms they were culturing.(Photo courtesy of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Archives)
