Titanic Homecoming

Titanic Homecoming

February 22, 2014

Crowds of family members, WHOI staff, and other wellwishers—including hundreds of journalists and 18 film crews—thronged the pier at WHOI in September 1985, as the research vessel Knorr returned from the joint U.S.-French expedition that discovered the resting place of the Titanic. A WHOI-led 1986 expedition returned to explore the wreck with the submersible Alvin and a prototype remotely operated vehicle Jason Jr. In 2012, the 100th anniversary of Titanic‘s sinking, WHOI researchers returned again with advanced technology to collect enhanced images and create a comprehensive map of the wreck site.
