This is a review of our current state of knowledge about mesoscale eddies over most of the North Pacific north of 20°N. The paper focuses on physical and dynamical properties, physical-biogeochemical interactions, impacts on the marine ecosystem, and the effects of climate variability and change. The basin is divided into four regions, and the knowns, unknowns, and in-betweens are summarized for each region.
