In July 2013, researchers aboard the research vessel Melville deployed a set of moorings at Station PAPA in the Northeast Pacific. The instruments, including this acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP), form part of the first Global Scale Node of the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI). This week, a team sails aboard R/V Knorr to place the first set of moorings in the Pioneer Array, a Coastal Scale Node centered on the continental shelf off the coast of the northeastern U.S. The goal of OOI is to provide comprehensive, long-term (and often real-time) measurements of physical, chemical, and biological ocean processes for researchers studying questions ranging from climate change to fisheries to seafloor tectonics.
