Bi-coastal Battering

Bi-coastal Battering

November 14, 2012

While Hurricane Sandy was lashing the East Coast, a low-pressure system was making life difficult for the scientists and crew of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy. The team was on their way to port in Dutch Harbor after a cruise off the northern coast of Alaska, when the ship faced 15-foot waves and 40-knot winds from a low-pressure system over the Aleutian Islands. Despite the stormy trip home, the team was able to sample a 210-mile-long swath of the continental shelf to study the changing Arctic Ocean system.
