Bear

December 15, 2011

Bear was purchased by WHOI in 1952, after a stint in World War II as a troop carrier and supply vessel in the South Pacific. At WHOI, the vessel made 192 cruises in the western North Atlantic, venturing as far as Bermuda and Puerto Rico. Bear took acoustic, bathymetric, and seismic measurements, and participated in fish observation studies. In 1963 the 103-foot vessel was sold to an East Coast fisherman, and refitted for scalloping.
