Pancakes at Dawn

Pancake ice covers the sea on one of the last sunrises that scientists and crew aboard the U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Healy‘s saw in the northern Chukchi Sea, where the sun doesn’t come up in winter. Led by WHOI biologist Carin Ashjian, the first winter research cruise to study the Chukchi Sea ecosystem is now underway.
