Krill salad

May 8, 2009

Krill, beautiful krill…..  a receding tide in Dutch Harbor, AK, left thousands of these shrimplike animals washed up on the beach, where WHOI researcher Phil Alatalo took this photo. He accompanied WHOI biologist Carin Ashjian, who led the 2008 cruise to the Bering Sea to study the Arctic ocean ecosystem and links between life in the water, ice, and sea floor. Krill are an important link in this productive ecosystem, eating algae and eaten by fish, birds and whales. Look in on Ashjian’s current cruise to the same region this April and May, on WHOI’s Polar Discovery site. (Photo by Philip Alatalo, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
