Snowy volcano

WHOI researcher and photographer Chris Linder gazes at 12,400-foot Mt. Erebus in Antarctica. This was a calm day at Cape Royds, during an expedition in 2007, “though as you can see the wind really picked up at about 18,000 feet,” Linder noted. “Erebus is a hard-working volcano, erupting around the clock and sometimes as many as 60 times per day,” he and colleague Hugh Powell wrote in an online journal featured on the web site Polar Discovery. “Occasionally, the lava lake at the summit throws out ‘lava bombs’. They resemble half-baked cupcakes of rock, still molten in the middle, and sometimes the size of an armchair.”
