Takuss, Greenland

Takuss, Greenland

January 8, 2009

Researchers who spent weeks in Greenland camping and working on the ice sheet said a final takuss (Greenlandic for see you) to Disko Bay, located in the coastal town Ilulissat.  Photographer Chris Linder documented WHOI scientists Mark Behn and Sarah Das, along with University of Washington researchers, during their stay on the ice sheet.  Researchers worked there to learn how Greenland’s ice sheet is disappearing. Specifically, they investigated glacial lakes, which form atop the ice sheet each spring and summer as returning sunlight melts ice and snow. As global temperatures rise, more lakes and cracks may form, accelerating the flow of ice to the sea.
