Whale of a Project

Whale of a Project

February 18, 2008

Working in the recently renovated Coastal Research Laboratory at WHOI, engineering assistant Paul Fraser puts finishing touches on a surface buoy that will be later deployed in Massachusetts waters for monitoring the location and behavior of North Atlantic right whales. In January 2008, WHOI engineers and technicians deployed ten of the passive acoustic whale detection systems equipped with WHOI-developed stretch-hose technology to overcome North Atlantic weather and waves along the shipping lanes into Boston. The systems were built in collaboration with the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology and Excelerate Energy for detection of right whales during the construction and operation phase of a new liquid natural gas port off of Boston.
