They Walk the Line

WHOI engineer John Kemp (left) and oceanographer Peter Winsor make their way down the food line on the icebreaker Oden. On the Swedish icebreaker, the gravy train usually starts with rolls and bread, cheeses and cold cuts, then winds its way past salads, and hot entrees. Then there are beverages coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and an assortment of juices, including lingonberry. Few go away hungry. Oceanographic research institutions and other sea-faring companies put a premium on good food for the sake of morale and health at sea.
