Fresh Tomatoes

December 19, 2007

While working in Antarctica, some research groups travel with a complete portable shelter called a “tomato.”  The fiberglass-walled unit keeps people out of the elements and provides a place to sleep and cook. It’s designed to be moved either by trailer or by helicopter. The red paint makes it easy to find in the snow and ice. The tomato is popular with divers because it can be parked next to the ice hole and offers a quick way to warm up after a swim.(Photo by Chris Linder, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
