The United States Postal Service, WHOI, and the DSV Alvin Study Group Chapter #108 of the Universal Ship Cancellation Society (organization dedicated to the collection and study of mail and postmarks from ship – all kinds of ships, military and civilian, from all over the world) will celebrate the 60^th anniversary of DSV Alvin’s first dive off the WHOI dock on June 26, 1964, with a pictorial postmark designed by WHOI’s own Natalie Renier. Bring your first-class forever stamped envelopes with stiffened inserts to Redfield Lobby on Wednesday, June 26 between 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to get the pictorial cancellation applied. Be sure to place the stamps to be cancelled in the upper right corner of the envelope as the cancellation is approximately 2.5” long by 1.5” wide. If you are unable to attend the one-day event, the pictorial postmark will be available for an extended period of 30 days by mail order at the Falmouth Post Office. In an outer envelope include the stamped envelopes to be serviced and a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) with sufficient postage for return.
