WOODS HOLE PUBLIC LIBRARY

November 27, 2023 @ 8:00 am - December 16, 2023 @ 5:00 pm

n celebration of Native American Heritage Month, the library and the Woods Hole Diversity Advisory Committee are teaming up to offer a screening of a recent documentary on Monday, November 27 at 6 p.m. The film, released in July of 2023, chronicles the Lakota Indians’ fight to reclaim control of the Black Hills. After the discovery of gold on Lakota land in 1874, the Black Hills Act stripped the tribe of most of the acreage in the Dakotas and northwestern Nebraska it had been ceded by treaty decades earlier. Ever since, the Lakota people have been fighting for ownership of their lost land. The library’s licensing agreement prevents publication of the title of the documentary, but it can be found at woodsholepubliclibrary.org. The screening will be held in the lower-level meeting room at the library and is free and open to the public. The library will offer two opportunities for holiday book shopping on Saturday, December 2. At the library, the regular year-round book sale will be bigger and more festive than ever, with books not only on the shelves along all the walls, but also on tables which will be set up through the middle of the room. The sale will be open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 2, and is planned to coordinate with the Renaissance Fair, just down the road at the Woods Hole Community Hall, so people can enjoy shopping at both locations. After that day, the sale will continue during regular library open hours through the New Year. Also on Saturday, December 2, shoppers can find even more gift-worthy literary treasures at Water Street Kitchen during “Books & Bubbles” from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. An attractive, curated selection of used books will be available for purchase, along with festive drinks. For every drink sold, Water Street Kitchen will donate $1 to the library, so shoppers are encouraged to embrace the festive atmosphere and enjoy a glass of bubbles! Water Street Kitchen will also offer a generous gift card promotion. For every $100 gift card purchased you will receive an additional $20. A merry, convivial atmosphere can always be found at this annual event, where shoppers can get a good start on their holiday shopping and visit with friends at the same time. These book sales are a major source of fundraising for the library, and purchasing used books is a great way to keep these materials out of landfills and into the hands of eager readers. For more information either call the library at (508) 548-8961 or visit the website www.woodsholepubliclibrary.org. The library is at 581 Woods Hole Road, Woods Hole, Mass. For more than twenty years, library has been fortunate to receive pottery from their favorite local potters to raffle in an effort to raise funds for the library’s operations. This year’s raffle features seven unique offerings from five talented and generous local potters. The public eagerly awaits this opportunity to win a piece of local art, and simultaneously support their local library. This year the featured potters are Ann Newbury, Susan Nowogrodzki, Anne Halpin, Tessa Morgan, and Anju Rajani. All are avid users and supporters of the library. All the pottery is on view at the library and also on the library’s website www.woodsholepubliclibrary.org. Tickets for the raffle, which are $2 for one ticket and $5 for three tickets, are available at the library at 581 Woods Hole Road. Drawing of the winning tickets will be held on December 6. The library encourages the public to visit these generous artists at their studios, and support them, just as the potters have done for the library.
