WOODS HOLE PUBLIC LIBRARY

July 17 @ 12:00 am - August 2 @ 12:00 am

The library’s Social Justice Book Group will meet for a discussion of Richard Kahlenberg’s “Excluded: how snob zoning, NIMBYism, and class bias build the walls we don’t see” on Wednesday, July 17, at 7 p.m. This book is a timely indictment of America’s housing policy that reveals the social engineering underlying our segregation by economic class, the social and political fallout that result, and what we can do about it. Copies of the book are available to check out through the library or are available for purchase through Eight Cousins Bookstore with a book group discount. Richard Kahlenberg will also be in Woods Hole later in the summer on August 26 to give a talk at MBL’s Clapp Auditorium. Later in the summer, the group will discuss “The Jazzmen. How Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Count Basie Transformed America” by Cotuit author Larry Tye on Wednesday, August 7, and “James” by Percival Everett on Wednesday, September 11. These discussions will all take place at the library in the lower-level community room at 7 p.m. The library will screen a revival of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing on Thursday, July 18, at 6 p.m. Set in early 1980’s Gibraltar, the spiffy navy uniforms, clear class distinctions and high-spirited post-Falklands partying lend a fun modern context to the plot and verbal sparring of this classic Shakespeare comedy. The running time is approximately 2 hours 40 minutes. This event is free and open to the public and will be screened in the library’s lower-level community room. The library’s “Armchair Traveler Book Club” will be hopping over to France in July. On Saturday, July 20, at 3 pm, the group will discuss The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George, a charming tale of a floating bookstore and the lonely man who serves as a literary apothecary prescribing books as medicine. Copies of The Little Paris Bookshop are available at the library. Email whpl_mail@clamsnet.org or call (508) 548-8961 to register. The library invites all creative community members to participate in this summer’s Community Art Project! Each summer, the library selects a common medium or theme, community members create works of art using that medium or theme, and the amazing results are displayed in the library and auctioned off as a fundraiser. This summer, the common medium is a ubiquitous material in all of our lives: newspaper! Community members of all ages are encouraged to participate in this fun and creative tradition. The library has an ample supply of newspapers available for those who do not have their own at home. Completed projects should be brought to the library by Monday, July 22, and will be on display for the entire week. The library will begin its summer Lassalle Dance Lecture Series with a presentation by Gretchen Ward Warren on her new book, Hollow Bone: A Naïve Wanderer’s Journey from Outback to Opening Night on Tuesday, July 23, at 7 p.m. For her illustrated presentation at the library, Ms. Warren will share the experiences that led to the creation of Hollow Bone and speak about her greater mission of educating others about indigenous rights. She will read excerpts from the book as well as share videos of her dance production. Her story shows how when the world of classical ballet collides with the rhythmic heartbeat of indigenous dance, a transformative journey emerges. Copies of the book will be available for purchase through Eight Cousins Bookstore at the talk. On Saturday, July 27, from 5:30-7 p.m., all are invited to attend a party and silent auction. All pieces will be auctioned off as a fundraiser for the library, and this party is a festive time to come together to celebrate our community’s creativity. The library will again be holding its eagerly awaited Accessories and Adornments Sale on Saturday, August 3, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The annual summer sale is not only an important source of fundraising income for the library but also a festive community event. From now until August 2, the library invites donations of jewelry as well as women’s scarves, shawls, hats, handbags, gloves, and belts and men’s ties, belts, gloves, and hats (but not baseball caps). As always, the library is grateful for the community’s support and generosity. Donations may be dropped off at the library any time between now and August 2 during open hours (1 to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday with additional hours Monday and Wednesday). For more information, call the library at (508) 548-8961.
