A view from the bridge

June 3, 2010

It’s just another relatively routine autumn day in the North Atlantic for the WHOI-operated research vessel Knorr. On an expedition to the Irminger Sea in October 2007, scientists and crew faced winds ranging from 60 to 100 knots and 30- to 40-foot-tall waves. WHOI scientist Bob Pickart, MIT/WHOI graduate student Kjetil Våge and others ventured into this remote region to investigate largely unexplored ocean currents that play critical roles in driving both the region’s climate and the ocean’s global circulation.
