An Ocean-Going Tradition, Then and Now

An Ocean-Going Tradition, Then and Now

November 14, 2010

In this 1965 aerial view of Woods Hole, WHOI’s three large laboratories, left to right, are visible: the Bigelow, Smith, and Redfield buildings. The research vessels Chain and Bear are tied to the WHOI pier, and Crawford is at the Dyer’s ramp. Today, WHOI operates four ships, The Atlantis, Knorr, Oceanus and Tioga. Each of these floating laboratories carries a suite of sonar and bottom-mapping equipment, sampling gear, diving and small-boat launching facilities, and meteorological sensors.(Photo courtesy of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Archives)
