Members of the Wampanoag tribal nation (foreground) welcome the crew from the Hōkūle’a at WHOI this summer. Hokule’a is a traditional Polynesian sailing canoe currently on a round-the-world tour to highlight traditional navigation methods and knowledge of the ocean. The welcome ceremony included a performance of a song written about the vessel and its journey by the children of the Neekun School, a Wampanoag language immersion program on Cape Cod. The Hōkūleʻa team later attended the Mashpee Wampanoag’s 95th annual powwow as guests of honor. (Photo by Tom Kleindinst, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
