Briefing the Press

Briefing the Press

June 14, 2016

Andy Bowen, a WHOI principal engineer and director of the National Deep Submergence Facility (NDSF), provided details to the media on how WHOI-operated vehicles were used to help the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) locate the voyage data recorder (VDR) from the sunken cargo ship El Faro. Brian Curtis (left), deputy director of the NTSB’s Office of Marine Safety, Carl Kaiser (right), AUV Sentry program manager at WHOI, also participated in the press conference, describing how the VDR was found in 4600 meters (15,000 feet) of water attached to the sunken ship’s mast. The briefing was held on May 5, upon the completion of their expedition aboard the R/V Atlantis. (Photo by Jayne Doucette, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
