Caryn
December 17, 2011Caryn joined WHOI in the late 1940s and made 110 cruises, mostly along the East Coast through the Caribbean, and around Bermuda. The vessel was used for a variety of purposes, from the study of underwater sound to Gulf Stream surveys. In 1958, the 96-foot wooden ketch was sold and engaged in charter trade. While in the West Indies on New Year’s Eve in 1974, the vessel burned. It was a cinematic end for Caryn, a ship rumored to have been built in 1927 specifically for smuggling.
