Coming Aboard for Its Annual Check-Up

WHOI engineer John Kemp (in coveralls) and bosun Blaine Blinkhorn (in red) recover a McLane Moored Profiler (MMP) from the Beaufort Sea during a research cruise on the Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker Louis S. St. Laurent.  The 2004 cruise was part of the long-term Beaufort Gyre Exploration Project—which is still in progress—to study a massive reservoir of fresh water in the sea. The MMP had spent the previous year gathering data on currents, salinity, and temperature.
