William Stelling Von Arx (1916-1999), shown here working with a wide-angle cloud camera and lens, first came to WHOI in 1945. He is known for his work in physical oceanography as well as his interest in capturing single images of the entire sky and in using cartographic methods to obtain information about clouds from these. Later in his career, he turned his attention to solar energy and long-range solutions to world energy problems. After teaching at Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Von Arx returned to the Institution full time in 1967 and became Scientist Emeritus in 1979.(Photo by Jan Hahn, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
