An Easter Island moai casts its gaze on a visitor, the research vessel Knorr anchored off the port of Hanga Roa, Rapa Nui, in the early 1990s. The ship that found Titanic and discovered lush communities of chemosynthetic life at seafloor hydrothermal vents will retire at the end of 2014. During its 44-year career, Knorr crisscrossed the world ocean and sailed 1,360,000 miles on more than 300 scientific voyages. Along the way, it crossed the equator 58 times, ranged from 80°N latitude to 68°S, and stopped in 46 countries. (Photo by P.E. Robbins, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
