Glacier Summer Camp

Glacier Summer Camp

October 30, 2016

Yellow tents at the edge of a glacier were home to WHOI researchers for seven weeks in 2008. The researchers collected samples from glaciers on the western edge of the Greenland ice sheet, and found that glaciers may contribute significant amounts of iron, a necessary nutrient, to the North Atlantic Ocean. Maya Bhatia, an MIT-WHOI Joint Program student at the time, and colleagues found that glaciers may contribute significant amounts of iron, a necessary nutrient, to the North Atlantic Ocean, and that the changing climate may increase meltwater and iron inputs and stimulate plankton growth in spring and summer.
