Keeping Warm

Keeping Warm

June 7, 2015

The Clothing Distribution Center of the U.S. Antarctic Program in New Zealand provides one-stop shopping for polar explorers. If you are going south to the Antarctic continent on their watch, then you are going to go warm—and safe. The friendly New Zealand staff filled two bright-orange duffel bags with super-heavyweight socks, fleece underwear, four kinds of gloves, three types of mittens, and a parka. The hard part can be trying it one comfortably in the 75-degree weather and fierce Southern Hemisphere summer sun.(Photo by Chris Linder, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
