Knorr: 42 Years Young

Knorr: 42 Years Young

August 19, 2010

On August 21, 1968, the hull of the R/V Knorr first entered the water in Bay City, Michigan, and has since traveled more than one million miles in the service of oceanographic research. It received a major overhaul in 1989, and in 2005 it was refit to carry the WHOI Long Core. The ship, which is owned by the U.S. Navy and operated by WHOI, remains a centerpiece in the University-National Oceanographic System (UNOLS) fleet. Knorr is currently docked in Woods Hole preparing for its next trip on August 28 to Nuuk, Greenland.
