Alvin is currently in Woods Hole undergoing maintenance work and so the Deep Submergence Science Committee (DESSC), which acts as an advisory group to the National Deep Submergence Facility operated by WHOI, took the opportunity to conduct a “boot camp” for early-career scientists to learn how to plan and carry out a submersible research program. Here, a pilot shows two scientists inside the personnel sphere the illumination pattern cast by the lights that allow scientists to capture high-definition video of features and organisms on the seafloor or in the water column.(Photo by Ken Kostel, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
