Making Camp

Researchers collect gear delivered by helicopter at a site in West Greenland. The expedition led by WHOI oceanographer Fiamma Straneo and glaciologist Sarah Das in the summer of 2013 was funded by the Arctic Research Initiative to gather data on meltwater flowing from the base of the glacier in the background by deploying a “JetYak” autonomous surface vehicle close to the calving face of the glacier. Straneo and Das are trying to understand the exchanges of heat and fresh water between glacier and ocean in the region to improve their ability to explain ongoing and future changes in Greenland and their impact on the ocean circulation and climate.
