Man Outboard

February 3, 2015

Jim Broda (left) stands on the fantail of the research vessel Knorr just prior to the ship’s last science cruise as research assistant Al Gagnon tests the “manbasket” work platform attached to the stern of the ship. The manbasket and the slot in Knorr‘s transom to Broda’s right were just two of the changes made to the ship for it to accommodate the WHOI Long Core system, which was designed by Broda to collect seafloor sediment cores up to 45 meters (150 feet) long. Cores of that length often contain information about Earth’s climate stretching back millions of years.(Photo by Jayne Doucette, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
