WHOI research specialist Rick Krishfield (left, with clipboard) and ship’s boatswain Bob Taylor (foreground) observe as WHOI engineering assistants John Kemp and Kris Newhall assemble a mooring on the deck of the Canadian icebreaker Louis St. Laurent. The mooring was later deployed on the continental shelf northeast of Point Barrow, Alaska, the northernmost point in the United States. The mooring was part of an effort to understand how Pacific waters coming through the Bering Strait interact with the deep Arctic basins. WHOI researchers and colleagues from around the world will return to the Beaufort Gyre later this summer as part of the five-year experiment.
