Night Shift

July 23, 2011

With the nighttime Arctic sun as a backdrop, Hugh Maclean of Canada’s Institute of Ocean Sciences signals to the winch operator during deployment of a CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) instrument in the Beaufort Sea north of Alaska. This August 2005 cruise, on the Canadian ice breaking ship CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent, was part of the Beaufort Gyre Exploration Project to explore how climate change has affected circulation patterns in the Arctic Ocean. Researchers and crew worked around the clock to make the most of the long summer days and their short time in the region. (Photo by Chris Linder, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
