WHOI research engineer Casey Machado from the Deep Submergence Laboratory gently lowered what was then the group’s newest vehicle, Nereid Under Ice (NUI), into a test pool in 2015. The hybrid remotely operated vehicle was designed to work as a tethered vehicle or an untethered autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) under sea ice and at the edge of a glacier. Last year, Machado accompanied WHOI geochemist Chris German with NUI north of Greenland to look for signs of hydrothermal vents and associated life on the seafloor of the Arctic Ocean.
