Proof of Concept
January 8, 2014Matt Long sets up the prototype of his new eddy correlation hydrogen ion and oxygen exchange system (ECHOES) on Great Pond in Falmouth on a cold November day. Developed over the past year with help from Matt Charette, William Martin, and Daniel McCorkle at WHOI, ECHOES is the first instrument to measure small changes in water velocity and pH, information that indicates changes in ecosystem metabolism in a field setting. This data helps Long study the effects of nutrient cycling and ocean acidifiction in estuarine environments—and the impacts on shellfish, tropical coral reefs, and shelf sediments.
