Research Relics
February 20, 2014WHOI archivist David Sherman holds a bottle like one of the more than 200,000 deployed between 1956 and 1972 to track ocean currents in the North Atlantic. One such bottle, released in 1956 off the coast of Nova Scotia, recently turned up on Canada’s Little Sable Island. Scientists continue to use modern decendents of the drift bottles to track Earth’s currents and reveal critical features that affect global climate and life in the ocean.(Photo by Ken Kostel, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
