Reunion on Dry Land

In 2007, WHOI marine biologist Tim Shank, diving in the submersible Alvin, made a call to NASA astronaut Sunita “Suni” Williams while she was orbiting the Earth in the International Space Station. During this first-ever call from the seafloor to the space station, they compared notes on science, exploration, and their respective vehicles. Shank promised to give Williams a tour inside Alvin one day. On Aug. 24, 2015, the stars aligned. With Alvin in port, and Williams and Shank back on land in Woods Hole, the two reunited at WHOI for a look at the newly upgraded Alvin.(Photo by Tom Kleindinst, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
