Southern Ocean sentinel

Daniel Bogorff of the Subsurface Mooring Operations Group snapped this image of penguins while on the R/V Aurora Australis enroute to Casey Station in Antarctica. The focus of the expedition, led by Steve Rintoul at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in Tasmania, was to learn more about how ocean currents influence sea ice. The WHOI team, which also included Brian Hogue, Jeff Pietro and Scott Worrilow, deployed moorings along the Antarctic Slope to track subsurface currents.
