WHOI engineer Matthew Adams labels a mooring anchor that will be deployed later this year as part of the Ocean Observatory Initiative‘s Pioneer Array. The array is one of the Observatory’s Coastal Scale Nodes and will eventually include a host of moorings, vehicles, and sensors designed to study the complex environment of the continental shelf, shelf break, and shelf slope off the East Coast of North America. The strings of moored instruments will be periodically recovered, anchors and all, and then refurbished and redeployed to maintain a continuous presence in a dynamic and economically vital portion of the North Atlantic.(Photo by Tom Kleindinst, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
