Elliot Richardson

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death December 31, 1999 of Honorary Member of the Corporation Elliot Richardson. He died at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was 79.

A graduate of Harvard University, Elliott L. Richardson spent much of his life in politics, both in Massachusetts and in Washington, DC. He served as U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts and as Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General of Massachusetts. He was appointed Secretary of Defense under President Richard Nixon and later served as Attorney General of the U.S. and as Secretary of Commerce. He resigned from the Nixon Administration during the Watergate era.

At the time of his death Elliot Richardson was a Senior Resident Partner in the Washington, DC, law firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy. He also served as a director of the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company, Crop Genetics International, Citizens Network for Foreign Affairs, and The Hitachi Foundation. He was a member of the American Bar Association and the Massachusetts Bar Association.

He served as Chairman of the U.S. delegation of the Law of the Sea Conference.

He is survived by a brother, three children and seven grandchildren.
