Francis John Selvitelli
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of former volunteer Francis John Selvitelli on April 13, 2025, at the JML Care Center in Falmouth. He was 91.
Fran was born in Medford, MA, son of the late Josephine (De Angelis) and Guy Selvitelli. He graduated from Medford High School before attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned a degree in electrical engineering in 1955. He proudly wore his red MIT blazer to all special events in his life including a grand 90th birthday celebration in August 2023. He met his late wife, Claire Magner Selvitelli, at an Emmanuel College/MIT mixer and were married in 1958. They spent their early years of marriage in Germany where Fran served in the U.S. Army. He completed his military service in 1961 reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel.
After leaving active duty, Fran and Claire raised a family in Winchester, MA, and Fran embarked on a long and successful career as an engineer and business owner. He brought his sharp intellect, dedication, and integrity to every endeavor and was known for his quiet strength and steady presence. Deeply committed to his community, Francis volunteered his time with the Boy Scouts and the Rotary Club. Fran also volunteered at WHOI for 15 years as a greeter in the Ocean Science Discovery Center as well as Peanut Butter Club. He was a beloved volunteer and will be sorely missed!
Fran was a devoted family man and is survived by his four children: Paul Selvitelli (Mona Haebler), Karen Hanlon (Edward), David Selvitelli (Ann), and James Selvitelli (Sandra); his brother, Paul Selvitelli (Janet); and his cherished grandchildren: Eddie, Kiara, Nicholas, Hope, Maeve, Kate, and Pierce. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Claire, with whom he shared 56 wonderful years of marriage. Fran and Claire built a beautiful life and family together, developed a wide circle of friends who loved to bike, travel, and share meals together.
Visiting hours will begin at 9:30 am on Wednesday, April 16 in Chapman Funeral and Cremations 475 Main Street Falmouth.
A Funeral Mass will be held in St. Patrick’s Church, 511 Main Street, Falmouth at 11:00 a.m.
Burial will follow the Mass in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at 12:30 p.m.
Fran will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to family, community, and country, and for a life lived with honor, kindness, and love.
