George H. Power

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of retiree George H. Power.  He was 85.

After serving in the army in the Korean War, he earned degrees in engineering and mathematics from Northeastern University. He began a 30-year career at WHOI as a research associate in the Information Processing Center. In 1973, he was promoted to research specialist.  In 1991, he was promoted to information systems specialist.  He retired in 1995 and was rehired in 1996 on a casual basis until 1999.

George could fix and build anything, including two rowboats. An enthusiastic amateur pilot, he flew a Piper Cherokee for over 25 years. He was a gifted photographer and created beautiful pictures in the days when “Photo Shop” meant his own darkroom. Never without a book, he particularly enjoyed military history. He was also an Anglophile and spent many happy vacations in London.

He is survived by his wife, Beverley Harper Power, now living in Attleboro, Mass.; his daughter Leslie Power of Staatsburg, NY; his sister Judith Blakeley of Wellfleet; his stepsons Jeff Osborne of Schenectady, NY; and Jonathan Osborne of Los Angeles, CA; and his stepdaughter Sarah Nadeau of Chicopee, Mass., and their children. His first wife, Dorothy Mattice Power, and his son Wade Power predeceased him.

His family will hold a private memorial at one of the Cape Cod beaches he loved.
