Gwen (Prior) Szent-Gyorgyi

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of former WHOI volunteer Gwen (Prior) Szent-Gyorgyi of Woods Hole on January 9.  She was 87.

Gwen was the wife of Gyula Szent-Gyorgyi, a refugee from the Hungarian revolution in 1956, who died in 2014.

Born in Youngstown, Ohio, she was living in Woods Hole when she met Mr. Szent-Gyorgyi. Their family lived in Chicago for almost two decades before returning to Woods Hole.

Her career in science included work at Harvard Medical School, Abbott Labs, Dartmouth College, and the Marine Biological Laboratory. After retirement, she continued her involvement in science, volunteering at WHOI in the Ocean Science Exhibit Center as well as the Marine Biological Laboratory.

She played competitive Scrabble.

She leaves her daughter, Lara Szent-Gyorgyi and her husband, Stephen Tracey; three grandchildren; many nephews, nieces, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A memorial will be held in the spring.
