Lee A. Vincent

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of former employee Lee A. Vincent on July 22 at the JML Care Center in Falmouth, Mass., surrounded by her daughters. She was 91.

Lee was born in Taunton, Mass., and was the daughter of the late Francis S. and Alice (Judge) Cordeiro.

Lee began her career at WHOI in 1948. She left in 1955 but returned in 1960 after she attended the University of Delaware and graduated with a degree in Russian Language. She returned to WHOI in 1960 as clerk for Ronald Veeder. She left in 1961 but returned in April 1963 as secretary for R.G. Stevens and left in October 1963.

In 1987 Lee returned to college and obtained a master’s degree from Cambridge College School of Education in Counseling Psychology. She worked as a full-time social worker until her retirement in 2007.

Lee loved spending time with her family and missed them greatly as they moved about the country and world.

Lee was an artist, a designer, a “fashionista,” a gardener, and a wonderful cook. She was a lifelong learner. Books, always non-fiction, were considered close friends.

Lee is survived by her daughters Shelley V. Vincent of Rockport, Mass, and Nancy V. McDonald and her husband Mark of Essex, CT; her grandchildren Zachary V. Martin and wife Taysa Charnell of Tacoma, WA; Spencer D. Martin and wife Jessica of Topsfield, Mass; Nathaniel V. Stevens and Charlotte Oedekoven of Greenwich, CT; Samuel V. Stevens of Surat Thani ,Thailand; and Lucy V. Stevens of Long Beach, NY; her great-grandchildren Brennon V. Martin of Tacoma, WA; and Sky Oedekoven Stevens of Greenwich, CT.

Services will be held privately at a later date.
