Norman E. Anderson

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of former employee Norman E. Anderson on February 17, 2025.  He was 85.

Born in Gardner, MA, to Ernest Robert and Anna (Newton) Anderson, Norman grew up in Athol, MA,  and joined the US Air Force after high school. He had a 20-year career with assignments around the US and Europe.

After his military service, he worked at WHOI and McLane Research Laboratories in East Falmouth. He began working at WHOI in 1976 as an assistant traffic supervisor.  In 1977, he was promoted to traffic supervisor.  He left WHOI in 1985.

Norman was very active in his church, singing in the choir and playing bells. He was also a member of the Cape Cod men’s choir We Are the Men, and performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London, England.

He leaves his children, Allen, James and Cheryl Anderson; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and his companion of 11 years, Karen Richard of Sandwich.

He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Betty Jane Anderson; and a sister, Elvia Anderson.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, March 2, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Blvd, Bourne, MA, 02532.

Burial will be private.
