Stephen P. Swope

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death December 8, 2004 of Member of the Corporation Stephen P. Swope of Riverside, CT. He was 68.

Stephen P. Swope joined the WHOI Associates in 1993 and was elected a Member of the Corporation in 1993. A summer resident of Woods Hole for many years, Steve Swope was the son of the late Gerard L. Swope, Jr. a former WHOI Trustee and lifetime Associate who helped establish the Associates program in 1952 and served as its first president.

Steve Swope was born June 14, 1936 and attended Tabor Academy in Marion, MA. He received a B.A. degree from Amherst College in 1958 and an M.B.A. degree from New York University in 1967. He worked as a sales manager at White Weld & Co., Inc. in London before beginning a long career at Kidder Peabody & Co., Inc., first as manger of international sales in New York, and later branch manager in Tokyo. He retired as Managing Director of Kidder Peabody in New York.

He was chairman of Teatown Lake Reservation, a nature preserve and education center, a Trustee of Tabor Academy, and a member of the Association for Investment Management and Research. Steve Swope was a director and member of the Executive Committee of BBH exhibits, a for-profit creator of touring exhibits for natural history and science museums. WHOI worked with BBH in creating the “Extreme Deep: Mission to the Abyss” exhibit on ships and vehicles, hydrothermal vents and other aspects of ocean research now on display at The Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, CT. An avid sailor, he was a member of the New York and Riverside Yacht Clubs.

Survivors include his wife, Susan (Vail) Swope of Riverside, CT.
