Report of Ann Bodio, student technician, eighth
week of work, July 29-Aug.2, 2002.
“…I went to…help Enid with
our experiment….I documented that there were 5 animals
attached to the Ceramicrete-6/24/02. There were 10 scallops
attached to the netting with the epoxy PSI 326, which is also
known as Smart Glue…This is the adhesive that we used
during the class at Mass. Maritime Academy with the cadets.
I miss…working …with the cadets. They were really
nice gentlemen. Stoelting…bone cement..failed…there
was only 1 animal attached. …the Ceramicrete from July
8 had 9 animals attached. I think our best two adhesives so
far would be the Smart Glue and the Ceramicrete.”
“First, I squeegee(ed) the table dry…
Second, I took the temperature of the water, which was 23
degrees C in the table with the scallops. Third, Drew and
Alex got Enid and (me) three dozen scallops. Fourth, (we)
scrubbed the scallops. Fifth, dry table with paper towels.
Sixth, I laid a piece of wax paper on the table and dried
one animal at a time with a paper towel (and) placed (it)
on the wax paper. Seventh, sprayed (ethyl) alcohol on all
the 12 animals to dry them. Eighth, applied the PSI-326 Smart
Glue to the scallops. Then we placed the netting on top. 11:24
am, all the animals are attached. The animals are trying to
clap …”
“On the boat ride I read an article about
aquaculture…Aquaculture can occur in the open ocean,
in estuaries near the coast, in spring-fed fresh water…triploid-tetraploid
technology is probably the most valuable breeding technology
for shellfish. Triploids are organisms with three sets of
chromosomes instead of two sets in normal diploids. …Triploids
grow faster…by 30-44% in most species…Benefit
of triploid mollusks is the improved meat quality during the
spawning season….Tetraploids are fertile and naturally
produce triploids when mated with diploids.”
“(On) the boat ride everyone was asking
me questions and I told them where I worked and where I (am)
planning to attend school in the fall.”
“Starfish like to eat scallops.
They are strong enough to pull the two valves apart to reach
the soft body inside.”
Carol is always willing to give Ann a helping
hand with the shellfish project.
